The Makalu Base Camp trek is a teahouse trek in a remote region of Eastern Nepal. Makalu is one of the world’s fifth highest mountain and belongs to the Makalu Barun National Park. This mountainous region is of outstanding natural beauty. Many of the locals live in isolated villages and rely on subsistence farming for their livelihoods. This trip is therefore a culturally unique and rich experience. Due to its relative inaccessibility, this area is little-known to tourists and only few trekking groups come to visit the Makalu Barun National Park.
The Makalu Base Camp trek begins with a flight to Tumlingtar at an altitude of 400 meters. In ten days you will hike to Base Camp at the high point of 4755 meters. First you will trek through the lush green subtropical Arun Valley. Second through dense rhododendron and pine forest where you climb up to alpine meadows. Fantastic panoramas offer themselves with every increasing altitude. You cross the two passes Shipton La and Keke La. In between lies the picturesque lake of Kalo Pokhari. Through the Makalu Barun National Park you climb up a valley to the base camp at 4775 meters. Base Camp lies directly at the foot of the striking rock and ice wall of the beautiful Makalu (8481 meters). From a view point above base camp you can enjoy a superb panorama of some of the world’s highest mountains, including Everest (8850 meters), Lhotse (8516 meters), Makalu (8481 meters) and Baruntse (7220 meters). It will take you five to six days to retrace your steps out of the Makalu Barun National Park to Tumlingtar. Your Makalu Base Camp trek ends here and a flight will take you back to Kathmandu.
