About the festival:
Dumje festival is a typical Sherpa festival which celebrates the birth of Guru Rinpoche on a lotus flower. It takes place exactly two months after Losar (Buddhist new year) dark moon day of the Tibetan lunar calendar. This is at the end of spring season which is also the time when livestock are taken up to higher pastures. It lasts four days and during the Dumje festival masked lama’s perform dances, prayers and rituals. After each festival day it is time for gathering of the local Sherpa villagers to have a merry time with Sherpa dance, singing, talking and good drinks.
Overview:
With Sherpa Heritage Trails you will have the rare opportunity to join the typical Sherpa festival of Dumje. We take you to the heart of Sherpa land in lower Everest region. In the authentic Sherpa village of Junbesi you can join us with the Dumje festival celebrations, and get a glimpse of Sherpa culture
Before you join Dumje festival you will hike the Lower Everest trek. A remote and cultural trek through the Solukhumbu. The trail goes along mountain paths through authentic villages, and pine & rhododendron forests. During this trek you will enjoy local Sherpa culture and beautiful scenery of the Nepal Himalaya. As the Dumje festival takes place in spring time, you will also enjoy the last rhododendron flowers which is the national flower of Nepal. One of the highlights of this trek is a stunning sunrise from the Pikey Peak summit. On a clear day you can see the snowcapped mountains from Kanchenjunga all the way to Mustang. Even Sir Edmund Hillary stated that the best view for Everest is from this peak. It is a slow descent towards Junbesi valley where you will join the Dumje festival celebrations at the local monastery.
