Langtang Valley

The Langtang Valley is not far situated from Kathmandu. From certain viewpoints in the city, you can clearly see the peaks of the Langtang mountain range. The valley is a National Park and is inhabited by the local ethnic Tamang and Sherpa people. During this trek you will hike into the beautiful valley, pass by many Buddhist mani walls, and are you able to enjoy a stunning mountain view from Kyangjin Ri. After this view, you will slowly leave the valley and hike towards barren the Gosainkunda Lakes. As soon you have crossed the Laurebina La pass, you enter the charming hills of Helambu where this trek ends.

From Kathmandu, it’s a day’s drive, past local villages and farming terraces, to the tiny village of Syabrubesi. The trek starts with crossing a suspension bridge over the river Langtang Khola. On the first days of trekking, you will follow the roaring river that cuts through a gorge. After a few days, the valley opens up to meadows and small farming settlements. You will be treated with a view of stunning views far into the valley. The local population are Buddhist Tamang & Sherpa and on your way, you will pass many mani walls. In the valley, you will pass the village of Langtang. This local village was buried under millions of tons of rock and ice during the devastating earthquake in the spring of 2015. The only building still standing was the Gompa. Slowly houses and teahouses have been rebuilt. You continue on to Mundu or will stay a night in Langtang. In the village of Kyangjin Gompa, we take a resting day. An optional day hike is possible to one of the surrounding peaks, the Kyangjin Ri (4600 meters) or the Tsergo Ri (5200 meters). From these peaks, you will have a panoramic view of the entire Langtang mountain range including the Langtang Lirung and Shishapangma. From Kyangjin Gompa you follow back your footsteps out of the valley the same way you came. At the village of Thulo Syabru, you will turn towards the sacred lakes of Gosainkunda. These lakes are at an altitude of 4200 meters. You walk along the main large lake at Gosainkunda for an overnight stay. This is a fascinating place in a charming setting surrounded by high mountain peaks. This place is considered to be sacred for hundreds of years. Every year in August the lakes are visited by hundreds of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims and Shamans (medicine men) during the festival of “Jani Purnima”. After the Gosainkunda lakes, you cross the Laurebina La pass (4605 meters) and walk into the charming hills of Helambu. You will leave the high mountains behind you and hike through the wooded hills to the road nearby Ghul Bhanjyang.
