The Bhairav Kunda trail is a trek to the pilgrimage holy lake, through untouched traditional villages in the middle of spectacular Himalayan landscapes. This trek is close to the Tibetan border. The trail takes you through a mixture of beautiful mountain scenery and the terraced fields. Along the way you pass characteristic houses of rural villages from different ethnic groups.
The trek starts with a five hour drive to the lovely village of Jalbire. This Newar village is set on the banks of the Balephi River. The first days the trek passes local villages and local schools. Slowly the trails will be getting more remote, and you trek through a dense rhododendron forest. It is in this forest that you will set up camp for the night. Finally you will reach the holy lake of Bhairav. Bhairav Kund is named after the destructive aspect of Lord Shiva (Bhairav) and is one of the sacred pilgrimage sites for Shamans. Both Hindus and Buddhist devotees visit this high altitude (4200 m) holy mountain lake. They pay homage and bathe away sins during every Bhadra (August) Full Moon. From Bhairav Kunda you will walk early in the morning to the Bhairav top to see the sunrise over the mountains. From this viewpoint you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the Himalaya. The most famous mountain ranges you will see are those of Langtang and Rolwaling. After this wonderful early morning treat you will descend down steeply to the village of Sherpa Goan. This trek ends in Larch where you can walk to a local hot spring. From Larche you will drive back to Kathmandu.
