Arun Valley, the village of Bung

The Arun valley is a remote area between Sagarmatha and Makalu Barun. This trek takes you through farming villages, high mountain settlements and past monasteries. Few trekkers visit this gem valley, and the locals are friendly and hospitable to you. From Phakding you hike back to Lukla over the crowded Everest trail.

After a flight to Tumlingtar, you hike in the hillside towards the Arun valley. Soon after you start the trek you can see the Chamlang and Makalu mountains. You will pass terraced fields and lush tropical forests of cardamom, banana and papaya trees. After Gothey you cross through several picturesque small villages with whitewashed thatched roofs. In the river, you might see traditional fishermen with their long bamboo nets. Towards Sanam, you will cross the Salpa Banjyang pass (3365 m) towards the Solukhumbu region. From the windy pass, you will have wonderful views of the mountains. As you follow the trail you will pass charming Sherpa villages and monasteries. Meanwhile, the Mera Peak becomes visible in the distance. From the Surki La pass (3065 m) you can see the mountain Karylung and the more famous Numbur mountain. The lovely village of Pangom has a Hillary school, a Tibetan gompa and some nice lodges. The trails follow towards Sagarmatha with views of the sacred Sherpa Peak, Khumbila and Kusum Kangarung. After Paiyan you will leave the remote and tranquil valley and enter the trail of Everest Base Camp. From Phakding it is an easy walk towards Lukla. From Lukla, you will fly back to Kathmandu.
