Classic route Paphlu to Everest Base Camp 17 Days
Duration: 17 days
Trip level: moderate (info?)
Maximum altitude: 5554 m
Season: all year
This walk is the original route towards Everest Base Camp. Today, the largest group of trekkers flies directly to Lukla to start their adventure. But for many years, the trekking route began in Jiri, let’s call it the retro route. You start in Paphlu because the road to Jiri is in terrible condition and the road to Paphlu is much better. This trekking route has a number of benefits. You acclimatize considerably better, and the section to Lukla is a quiet trail. You will encounter fewer tourists, making it easier for you to make contact with the local Sherpa people.
The adventure begins with a long drive through the mountains to Paphlu. The first days you walk through rhododendron and spruce forests. Passing through local villages you encounter the local live in the Khumbu. From day 5 you walk the same path to Everest Base Camp as from Lukla airport. From Lukla it is a two days walk to the village of Namche Bazaar where you stay an extra day to acclimatize your body to the altitude. From Namche Bazaar a day hike to the Everest View Hotel, where you have a beautiful view of the mountains is optional. This walk is ideal for further acclimatization, for you walk higher and sleep lower. A visit to the visitor center of the Sagarmatha National Park offers an interesting introduction to the local flora and fauna, and the Sherpa culture. The trek continues its path along the two Buddhists Monasteries of Thyangobche and the Gompa of Dingboche. These monasteries are important cultural centers in the Khumbu region. In Dingboche follows another day for you to acclimatize. During this day it is possible to make a small climb to a ridge with views of Ama Dablam, Makalu and Amphu Labtsa peak. After Dingboche the trek takes you to Gorakshep and you walk along moraines and an icy path. Slowly you hike towards Everest Base Camp and get a view of the impressive looking Khumbu icefall. At Everest Base Camp endpoint you can have a good look at the impressive snow moutain peaks all around you. After a night sleep in Gorakshep you climb to Kala Patar for the following day. From this mountain spot you can almost touch the Pumori mountain. This beautiful scenery will take your breath away. The next few days we slowly descend towards Lukla. You pass back the lively Thyangboche monastery once more. Back in Lukla you leave the mountains of the Sagarmatha National Park by plane.
